During a storm or hurricane, your windows are considered one of the most vulnerable areas of the home. Debris that are flying can shatter windows, which can cause injuries to those inside. What may happen after that is just as dangerous. A single broken window in the course of a hurricane can create a lot of pressure in a home – in fact, sometimes the pressure will become so much that the roof blows off. The highest quality hurricane shutters will provide full protection for your home from damage and it will ensure your loved ones aren’t injured. Rollgard Hurricane ShuttersThese are rolling or roll-up hurricane shutters that offer the highest level of protection from storms and they are easy to use. Even better, these shutters look great and won’t obstruct the window when they aren’t being used. Usually, a quiet motor will operate these rolling shutters. You can open or lower them with ease and you can crank operate the shutters – from the exterior or interior – which is a more affordable option. The actual shutters are kept in a box installed over the window and roll down into the pre-installed track on the sides of the opening until they come in contact with the stop at the base of the window. Once the shutters are closed, they are almost impossible to roll up if you don’t use the operator. The motorized shutters can be designed with override options, which means that if you lose power before a storm hits, you can still operate them by hand. If the windows in your home are larger, the installation may require a reinforcing bar, which is called a “purlin.” This ensures that the shutters are strong enough to stand up to the bad weather headed your way. Sometimes, these shutters are more expensive because they are custom made for your home.

Accordion ShuttersThese shutters offer you an interlocking blade systems that will fold up, into a small, discreet size when they aren’t being used. When they are stacked tightly, you can still use the window normally, and there will be no obstructions in your line of sight. This is true as long as there is plenty of space on each side of the window to hold the blade stack. These will be installed on a track above and below the windows and can be pulled and then locked shut in the middle before a storm hits. The accordion hurricane shutters are usually a mid-level option when it comes to cost that still offers a higher level of protection. These also work for bigger windows or glass doors in your home.
“Naples Hurricane Services has been prepping our home for years. They always do such an amazing job. Their staff is friendly, and they provide fast service. Our house always remains protected. Thanks so much!” – Kelly F

Bahama ShuttersThis style of hurricane shutters offer an easy, open style, which is reminiscent of the islands their name is derived from. Along with hurricane protection, these shutters also provide shade and give a higher level of style and appeal to any home.
If you are trying to protect your home before a storm hits, all you must do is lock the shutters at the base. |
Colonial ShuttersSimilar to the Bahama shutters mentioned above, these are often used for decorative purposes. However, you can also find ones that are rated for protection from hurricanes. The shutters are inspired by Colonial New England homes and offer warmth to any space. They are also more customizable with various hooks, shapes, and decorative features. These don’t hinge on the top, like some options, instead they hinge on the side. To use them the shutter will be closed, and the storm closure bars will be fastened to the pre-installed anchor points, which creates a rigid barrier.
“We recently hired Naples Hurricane Services to install colonial shutters on our home for not only hurricane protection, but to bring some of our hometown feel in the northeast down to Naples. They did an incredible job. Super friendly and completed the job in the time frame they gave. Highly recommend!" - Lisa C

Storm PanelsIf cost is a concern for your purchase, storm panels offer more protection and usually at a price that is much more affordable. They are available in several options including aluminum, tinted, and clear. These are fabricated with integrate bracing, which provides more strength to the design. However, it is necessary for this particular style of shutter to be installed before the storm moves in and then stored in a separate location when they are not being used. You can have these installed with opposing bolts on either size of where the opening is located. The panels include holes that will line up and they will be anchored using wingnuts. An alternative option is to install a channel on one side and bolts on the other portion of the window. This provides a much easier way to set up the panels. However, it’s important to note that there are some restrictions to the opening spans of the shutters when channels are used. The panels will then be cut into sections, which makes them more manageable, regardless of the opening size.

PlywoodIf there is a storm that is coming your way, and you have not installed any type of storm rated hurricane shutters yet, then plywood is an option. While this is not one we recommend because of the limited protective elements it offers, it is an option you have. If you need help with installation, you can call on our team before a storm.
When using plywood, you need to ensure it is, at a minimum, 5/8th of an inch thick and fasten it to the house or building using barrel or lag bolts. If you want to ensure the plywood shutters are working properly, they should be cut to the precise size of the opening and then installed inside of the recess that is two inches or more to help prevent the wind from being able to get behind the plywood. If plywood is installed over the window opening, rather than inside of it, it will be easily ripped away by strong windows. |
